Departmental Name Change

As a recipient of this newsletter, you are a student, faculty, or alum of the Counselor Education Program.  This (the program name) is unchanged.

Our department has been known in recent years as the Department of Allied Professions.  Starting this academic year, we have changed our name to the Department of Counseling and Higher Education.

As you probably know, we are part of the School of Education at NCCU.  There are two departments within the School of Education: (1) Curriculum and Instruction and (2) Counseling and Higher Education.

This change accurately reflects the two programs that are housed within our department (the Counselor Education Program and the Higher Education Administration Program). Please be patient as things get changed across the University.  Sometimes you may see "Allied Professions" and sometimes you may see "Counseling and Higher Education".

Are you planning on completing Practicum in the Spring Semester?

If so, you will need to complete your Mid-program Review this fall.  Reviews are currently scheduled between October 13-15.  Most (if not all) students who need to be reviewed this semester are currently enrolled in CON 5371: Pre-practicum.

If you need to schedule your Mid-program Review, please sign up for a time-slot using the calendar linked at the bottom of this page: http://www.nccucounseling.com/student2/index.php/advising/mppr

If you are not currently in Pre-practicum, or have not already recently completed Pre-practicum, there is no need to sign up for a review right now.

Do you think you will attempt to use your place of employment as your Practicum or Internship site?

If so, you will need to make a special written request the semester before your placement is set to begin.  For a spring 2022 placement, your request will need to be submitted by October 11, 2021.  Please note that MOAs for a spring 2022 placement are not due until November 12, 2021.  The special request must be made and approved before submitting your MOA for the spring.

More about this process HERE.

Pursuing a Second Degree - Changes Ahead

For students who are graduating Spring 2022 or later, you MUST complete a minimum of 18 semester hours above and beyond your original plan of study in order to receive a second degree.  There are very specific courses that must be completed to receive a second degree, and these are specified on this page: http://www.nccucounseling.com/student2/index.php/advising/dual-major

Please note that your second internship must consist of a 600-hour placement.  In other words, students receiving a second degree will complete a second 600-hour internship placement (600 hours for their first major, 600 hours for their second major).

Please speak with your advisor if you have any questions.
