Spring 2023 Schedule - A Note from the Department Chair
I know that we have only just begun the fall semester, but I wanted to share with you some thoughts about upcoming semesters. We are required to plan for future semesters months in advance, and we are currently in the midst of turning in our spring 2023 schedule.
As I know that you are aware, the presence of COVID in our lives has disrupted many things. Our Program has not been immune to this. Many/most of our current students (and some of our faculty) started the program while in the midst of the pandemic - and currently have a general understanding of timing of how courses have been offered...but that has been specific to the pandemic.
It is our intention to return to pre-pandemic offerings of classes within the Counseling Program. As a faculty, we have discussed this topic every semester since the pandemic began. As you are probably aware, we have both on campus and online versions of all three of our programs (Career, Clinical Mental Health, and School).

This document was published in October of 2019. Since the pandemic started, we've seen an increase in the number of students enrolled in our online programs. We will do our very best to accommodate everyone; however, I can already predict that it will be nearly impossible to satisfy everyone and their desires for when and how they may take their courses. Our goal is to help you move through the program at a steady rate, but it may not always be at the pace in which you thought you could go. Some classes may fill early, and you may need to adjust your schedule a bit. Some classes may be offered in a mode (online or on-campus) in which you can not take during a given semester, so you may need to adjust your plan/schedule with your advisor and take it the next time it is offered in your needed mode.
Keep in mind that any plan you develop with your advisor is always subject to change based on course availability.
Please note a few things:
- The courses listed in the course sequencing documents are based on offerings during the Spring, Summer, and Fall of 2019. They are only listed in this way to ASSIST with planning and advising.
- There is no guarantee that the courses will be offered every year as listed. You should re-visit your plan with your advisor every semester as schedules are released and advising takes place.
- Campus students should take campus courses when offered. Online students can not take on-campus courses. The sequencing of how and when courses are offered will impact how you progress through the program. You will want to pay very close attention to the sequencing. You will possibly/likely need to revise your current plan of study.
- ALL summer offerings are subject to faculty availability during the summer. No summer courses are guaranteed - as no faculty are obligated to teach during the summer months.
- Some classes are only offered online.
There will likely be some "growing pains". Now is the time to put into practice the types of things you are hopefully learning (e.g., empathy, understanding, self-awareness, communication, and self-care).

Eagle Counseling, Consultation, and Research Clinic (ECCRC)
We are excited to announce that the NCCU Counseling Program has established a counseling clinic for members of the surrounding community.
The Eagle Counseling, Consultation, and Research Clinic (ECCRC) will provide individual, couples, and family counseling at little to no cost for ages 13 and up. We are offering in-person sessions in our new clinic space in the H.M. Michaux, Jr. School of Education Building on campus in Durham - and via telehealth.
We believe in quality mental healthcare for everyone, regardless of their financial status or insurance coverage. All services offered on a sliding scale of $0 to $30 per session.

The Post-its-to-Practice Panel will focus on supporting the needs and changing the narrative of children and adolescents involved in the child welfare system or those with an incarcerated parent. This panel is designed for helping professionals, graduate students and supportive adults who have an interest in these fields. Attendees will: 1) learn from panelists working in justice services, human services, school, and clinical mental health counseling settings about their work, challenges and possible solutions in these fields, and best practices that will support their advocacy efforts, and 2) connect with other professionals and supportive adults in these fields.
