Q: I know that the deadline for applications is February 1st. I plan to take the GRE in late January and have my scores rushed. I am not certain that the scores will be sent to NCCU by February 1st, it may be a few days later. Will this hurt my chances of being accepted and having my application reviewed?

A: All materials (including GRE scores) must be in the Graduate Office by the deadline in order for your application to be considered.

Q: Do I have to be a full-time student?

A: A student may attend as a full or part-time student.

Q: When do classes meet?

A: On campus classes generally meet for two-and-a-half hours one day a week.  No classes are typically offered any earlier than 4pm.  During the summer, on campus classes meet twice a week for four hours (typically 4:00 until 8:00 pm or 5:00 until 9:00 pm).  For information about online classes, please see this page.

Q:  I have a master’s degree in another field and want to become a school counselor, do you have a licensure only program?

A:  We do not have a school counseling licensure only program.

Q:  I am in a master’s degree program and would like to transfer to the counselor education program at NCCU, can I?

A:  Students in other graduate programs at NCCU or other counselor education program must go through the formal Counselor Education Program admission process to be considered for admission.  If admitted, a maximum of 12 hours of course-work can be transferred into one of our programs.  That coursework must be comparable to the courses at NCCU and approved by the program for transfer.  Transferable courses will be less than two years old and the student must have received a B or better in them.

Q: Are there any particular scholarships when applying to the Department of Counselor Education?

A: No. The Department of Counselor Education does not have any particular scholarships. You will need to submit a "FAFSA" with NCCU's Office of Scholarships and Student Aid, who handles scholarship and financial aid matters. In addition to receiving assistance through the financial aid office, you may decide to independently pursue private scholarship sources. The College Foundation of North Carolina is an excellent resource.

Q: Do you offer any graduate assistantships?

A: The Department of Counselor Education has very limited assistantships available within the department, and they are typically offered to a continuing student. However, there are plenty of other assistantships on campus.

Q: I would like to receive more information about the different programs through the Counselor Education Program (i.e., cost of attendance, scholarships, list of resources for the program, etc.). Is there an information packet that I could possibly receive through the mail?

A: We do our very best to maintain most (if not all) of our information on our website (nccucounseling.com). We do not maintain any separate or additional printed information. You should be able to find most answers on the site.

Q: Is it possible for me to take a look at course syllabi and see a list of the textbooks that are used?

A: Yes. Copies of most of our syllabi and a textbook list can be found on the students' branch of our website

Q: How much are tuition and fees?

A: Please see NCCU's posted information related to tuition and fees.

Q: What is your GRE code?

A: Our institution code is 5495. For department code, either 0620 or 3802 will come to us.
