Kennedy_NCCU_Headshot.jpgThe Counselor Education Program at North Carolina Central University is pleased to belatedly announce the hiring of a new faculty member : Dr. Mia Kennedy.  Dr. Kennedy was hired and started in the fall 2025 semester.
 
Dr. Kennedy brings 17 years of professional counseling experience across K-12 and higher education settings. Her work with diverse student populations has equipped her with a broad and nuanced understanding of students’ academic, mental health, and career development needs. A proud graduate of North Carolina A&T State University (B.S., M.S.) and North Carolina State University (Ph.D.). Dr. Kennedy has dedicated her career to advancing equitable access, culturally responsive support, and advocacy for students and families.
 
Before joining NCCU, Dr. Kennedy was a faculty member in the Counseling Department at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where she supported the school counseling program. Dr. Mia Kennedy is a licensed school counselor and clinical mental health counselor associate. Her research focuses on school counselor preparation, career development, and anti-racist counseling practices. She has presented her scholarship at local, state, and national conferences, contributing to ongoing conversations about equity and excellence in the counseling profession. Dr. Kennedy is committed to preparing multiculturally competent counselors who are equipped to serve their communities with compassion and integrity.
 
Outside of her professional work, she enjoys listening to music, spending time with loved ones, and volunteering.

In October 2015, the Counseling Program at NCCU was selected as the "Most Outstanding Master's level Counseling Program" by the Southern Association of Counselor Education and Supervision.
