Safe Zone/Trans Zone Virtual Training


Facilitated by the NCCU LGBTA Resource Center.
Open to current students and faculty in the Counseling and Higher Education Department.

Friday, February 24, 2023 -- 1-3 PM 
 
Registration opened on January 10, 2023 and will close on February 20th

**All attendees will be given a certificate upon completion of the training

Description:

Safe Zone - Language surrounding the LGBTQ+ community consistently changes. This training begins with an introduction to the usage of pronouns, common terminology, and ways to be an effective ally to members of the LGBTQ+ community. 

Trans Zone - Similar to Safe Zone, this training dives a little deeper into the specificities of terminology and topics related to trans-identified individuals. 

 



March Webinar - Save the Date

 

Title: The Substance Use Recovery Experiences of African American Women 

Date: March 7, 2023, @ 1:00 p.m. 

Presenters: Dr. Taheera Blount and Dr. David Fitzpatrick 

Description: This webinar will discuss the results from a qualitative phenomenological research study that examined the impact of spirituality, religion, and family to achieve sustained recovery within the lives of eight African American women. This webinar highlights that recovery is occurring in the lives of African American women without the aid of formalized treatment.  

Objectives:

  • Explore how the Crack-Cocaine Era impacted the lives of African Americans  
  • Examine forms of recovery capital such as the Black church aids in the long-term recovery maintenance from substance misuse  
  • Identify approaches to collaborating with community stakeholders such as the Black church to help develop community-based partnerships for individuals dealing with substance use-related disorders  
  • Discuss strategies to incorporate spirituality and religion in the counseling session

Nu Chi Chi is hosting the next virtual Social Hour on Sunday, February 26th, 2023, from 7:00-8:00pm (EST). These events are open to all students and faculty in the counseling program. Social hours occur on the 4th Sunday of every month, from 7:00-8:00pm (EST), so remember to mark your calendars! 
 
If you're available – we'd love to see you. These events provide us with opportunities to get to know & support each other, and build community. We hope you'll stop by and say hello!

CPCE Testing Dates - Spring 2023

 

CPCE testing at NCCU Testing Center (Taylor Building) dates and availability for spring 2023: 

  • 2pm Wednesday, March 15 and 16, limited to 2 seats for each date 
  • 9am Friday, March 17, limited to 4 seats 
  • 8:30am Tuesday, March 21 - Friday, March 24, 2 seats each date 
  • 2pm Tuesday, March 21 - Friday, March 24, 4 seats each date

NCCU at the North Carolina Counseling Association (NCCA) Annual Conference


Several Faculty presented sessions and received awards at the 2023 North Carolina Counseling Association annual conference this past weekend. The annual conference was held February 9-11, 2023 at the Durham Convention Center.

Dr. Helen Lupton-Smith and alum Angela Richardson present a session.


Dr. Jennifer Barrow and alum Jordan Hyler present a session.


 

Dr. Levette Scott, Associate Professor of Counselor Education at NCCU, received the North Carolina "Innovation and Creativity in Counseling" Award.

 


Dr. Chadwick Royal, Professor of Counselor Education at NCCU, received the "Administrator of the Year" Award.
