Title: Navigating the Licensure Process

Date: April 13, 2021

Presenters: Drs. Levette Scott, Kelly King, and Kyla Kurian

Description:

Graduation is approaching!! Now what? How do I navigate through this licensure process? What do I need? Who can help me? In this session we will discuss the process and procedures of becoming licensed as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor-Associate and eventually Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor. This session will focus on discussing the National Counseling Examination (NCE), application process, the jurisprudence exam, the licensure affidavit, the disclosure statement, and the supervision contract. We will have a conversation about this process, the do’s and don’ts of this process.

At the end of this session students will be able to:

  • Provide an overview of the eight parts for the National Counseling Examination content.
  • Identify items needed for the application process.
  • Identify what the Jurisprudence exam entails.
  • Understand the role of supervision and how to choose a qualified supervisor.

Registration for the Summer and Fall Semesters - A Note from the Department Chair

The schedule for the summer and fall semesters is now available in BANNER.  Registration for both the summer and fall began for all students on March 17.

Please be aware that there are synchronous and asynchronous course listings both this summer and next fall.

  •      Synchronous: All students are online at the same time.
  •      Asynchronous: Students do not have to be online at the same time.

If a class is synchronous, there will be a specific day and time listed on BANNER.  Please pay attention to this information when registering.  If you register for a synchronous course, you are required to be present during each and every class day and time.  Synchronous classes meet every week on the same day at the same time.  If you cannot commit to the class meeting times, please do not register for the course.  You will need to develop a different plan with your advisor.

Registration and Overrides

Any communication regarding registration or course overrides should be through your advisor.  Please do not send any communication to Ms. Joyner about registration.  Your advisor should be the only person to communicate with Ms. Joyner regarding course registration.

Graduating this Summer?

Your application for graduation is due to your advisor by Monday, April 26.  Your advisor will need time to process your academic approval and submit it before the April 28th deadline in the nccuCounseling calendar.

Practicum and Internship - Summer and Fall 2021

Final Defense

Attention students graduating this spring and summer: Please sign up for an appointment time for your final defense. The defense is a mock-interview and is intended to sharpen your job seeking and interviewing skills. We will conduct your defense using WebEX.  You will need to sign up for an appointment time HERE.  A faculty member will send you a WebEX invitation sometime before the defense is to take place, but after you have scheduled an appointment.  Defenses for spring and summer graduates are scheduled for April 5-9.  Summer graduates need to schedule their defense this spring; defenses are not held during the summer break.

PRAXIS (Licensure Test for School Counselors)

The Professional School Counselor exam of the Praxis II (test number 5421) is required for school counselor licensure in North Carolina. This exam should be taken during your practicum or internship placement.  We now have a page dedicated to this topic on the student branch of our website.

Pursuing a Second Degree - Changes Ahead

For students who are graduating Spring 2022 or later, you MUST complete a minimum of 18 semester hours above and beyond your original plan of study in order to receive a second degree.  There are very specific courses that must be completed to receive a second degree, and these are specified on this page: http://www.nccucounseling.com/student2/index.php/advising/dual-major

Please note that your second internship must consist of a 600-hour placement.  In other words, students receiving a second degree will complete a second 600-hour internship placement (600 hours for their first major, 600 hours for their second major).

Please speak with your advisor if you have any questions.

Spring 2021 Graduation

It is our current understanding that North Carolina Central University will hold an in-person graduation ceremony this spring.  The ceremony for graduate students is scheduled for 8am on Friday, May 7, 2021.  It will be held outside in the O'Kelly-Riddick Football Stadium (on campus).  It is our understanding that there will be no guests permitted (just the graduates), and there will be no receptions on campus following the ceremony.  Graduates will march in front of the stage (not across) as their name is called.  Students will be mailed their diploma in addition to a commemorative box.
